The Faster and More Furious

In the wake of a string of unspeakable tragedies linked to gun violence at the hands of non-descript, seemingly socially-ostracized assailants, including but not limited to the recent June 7, 2013 shooting in Santa Monica, California, as well as the December 14, 2012 massacre of 20 children at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, America finds herself faced with addressing an issue of which the true intent of her leaders may possibly be just as vague and nefarious as the motives of the alleged killers themselves. In fact, they may even be intrinsically linked if not one in the same.

In the midst and aftermath of such tragedies, reason and rationale succumb to the blunter force of fear and uncertainty, resulting in the differences between a symptom and the source of a problem becoming blurred and indistinguishable to the common citizen who then merely begs for a solution - any solution - that would reinstate their emotional safety and security and return them to their respective place of normalcy despite the long-term and adverse effects of that supposed solution.

Such a state of fear and uncertainty is one that governments often take full advantage of when attempting to pass legislation that works to the advantage of special interests and to the detriment of its citizens. In the event that the citizens don’t respond accordingly or as expected, the governments simply get faster and more furious in their approach and resort to even more extreme measures of fear-mongering until the will of the people is dogged and destroyed to the point that they acquiesce and willfully throw away their freedom in exchange for security.

Such examples would include the speedy pass of the PATRIOT Act after 9/11, which, propelled by the wings of extreme fear, not only passed beneath the awareness of the American people, but nor was it read by the senators or members of Congress that passed it.

A second and more recent example would be last year’s passing of the NDAA bill which anointed the U.S. government with the right to kill it’s own citizens domestically and abroad with drones and other military armaments without exercising due process.

To little surprise, and just barely 2 months after finally admitting the possibility of the U.S. government attacking it’s own citizens on domestic soil while downplaying it as an improbable hypothetical, Eric Holder, the U.S. Attorney General, has now recently revealed that the U.S. has in fact killed 4 U.S. citizens on foreign soil - 1 intentionally, and 3 unintentionally - while justifying the act as a response against an “imminent” terroristic attack; the word imminent being the condition nestled in the wording of the NDAA bill to allow the legal disregarding of the right and effort of due process.

All things considered, it appears to many that the scene is being set and orchestrated to prep us for our own demise by eroding the very freedoms that make us proud to call ourselves Americans. We are now more committed to holding onto the perception of America than we are to holding onto the principles of what it means to be American. To little surprise, our pledges and mantras are now as hollow as the souls of the criminals whom we’ve elected to protect them.

Resultantly we have become comfortable with living in fear, shrugging it off as merely a sign of the times as we allow ourselves to be conditioned to accept the worst of mediocrity and the best of incompetence. We no longer strive to raise the bar. Instead, we silently suffer beneath the weight of those who lower it, singing their praises as we steadily become unworthy residents of the former “home of the brave."

Once strong, we now are in fear of shoes, suitcases and stray backpacks as we shudder and recoil at the mere mention of the words ‘bomb’ or ‘gun.’ Diversity has now become a characteristic of suspicion as ignorance has become a legitimate excuse for doing so. Everyone and everything are now things to be feared - potential terrorists - as fascism enters in upon the backs of our phobias and through the cracks in our conscience.

If 9/11 was the official demarcation on our war against terror then it is clear that we’ve lost as our fears and insecurities are greatest now than they’ve ever been. Terrorism has left us terrified. Now, we are slowly awakening to the realization that the true terrorists aren’t nearly as remote and unfamiliar as we once thought or were led to believe as we lift the thobes to find Italian-made suits bearing U.S. flag pens on the lapels hidden beneath. 

After all, it wasn’t Al-Qaeda or the Taliban that passed the bills that changed our laws and way of life, nor is it the Mujahideen who are indiscriminately tapping our cell phones and internet activity against the writ of our constitution. And even if it were, that would simply further prove my point.

But what does any of this have to do with guns and school shootings? Well, I’m glad that you asked.

As it relates to the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in December of 2012, the Virginia Tech shooting back in 2007, the Success Tech Academy shooting in 2007, as well as the notorious Columbine High School massacre back in 1999, an interesting and undeniable commonality in these crimes in addition to the fact that they were all school shootings is that the shooters of these massacres were not only reportedly taking psychiatric medications to address mental illnesses, but all of them also reportedly committed suicide immediately after their killing sprees.

The recent shooting spree (June 7, 2013) in Santa Monica, California, at the hands of 23-yr old John Zawahri can also be added to this list as that he too was reportedly suffering from mental health issues. The only difference being that he didn’t kill himself, instead, he was killed by police officers after a gunfight in the Santa Monica College library.

Even James Holmes, the alleged gunman in the Dark Knight movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colorado, was reported to have been taking prescription drugs for an undisclosed mental illness. However, this killing spree didn’t end in a suicide nor his death at the hands of officers. Instead, it ended without incident as that Mr. Holmes was found behind the theater calm, stoic and detached from the whole event, presumably by some to be under the influence of some narcotics/drugs. Per the testimony of one of the arresting officer, Jason Oviatt, he states, “He [James Holmes] was completely compliant. There wasn’t even normal tension in him. He seemed very, very relaxed. It was like there weren’t normal emotional responses to anything.”

Coincidence? Maybe. But when one considers an excerpt from a famous book entitled Behold The Pale Horse written in 1991 by William C. Cooper which was written with the intent of empowering “the people" by exposing past, present, and future government conspiracies and programs by revealing official, secret government documents, witness/insider testimony, and alternate theories, a different picture begins to emerge which potentially sheds a little more light onto the source of this gun problem and school shootings.

Here’s the excerpt from Behold The Pale Horse [page 225]:

“The government encouraged the manufacture and importation of firearms for the criminals to use. This is intended to foster a feeling of insecurity, which would lead the American people to voluntarily disarm themselves by passing laws against firearms. Using drugs and hypnosis on mental patients in a process called Orion, the CIA inculcated the desire in these people to open fire on schoolyards and thus inflame the anti-gun lobby. This plan is well under way, and so far is working perfectly. The middle class is begging the government to do away with the 2nd Amendment.

Author's Note: I have found that these events have indeed happened all over the country. In every instance that I have investigated — the incident at the women's school in Canada, the shopping center incident in Canada, the Stockton, California, massacre, and the murder of Rabbi Meir Kahane — the shooters were all ex-mental patients or were current mental patients who were ALL ON THE DRUG PROZAC!

This drug, when taken in certain doses, increases the serotonin level in the patient, causing extreme violence. Couple that with a post-hypnotic suggestion or control through an electronic brain implant or microwave or E.L.F. intrusion and you get mass murder, ending in every case with the suicide of the perpetrator.

Exhume the bodies of the murderers and check for a brain implant. I think you are going to be surprised. In every case the name of the murderer's doctor or mental treatment facility has been withheld.

I believe we will be able to establish intelligence-community connections and/or connections to known CIA experimental mind-control programs when we finally discover who these doctors of death really are.”

Still a coincidence? Not likely, especially when one considers the first sentence - “The government encouraged the manufacture and importation of firearms for the criminals to use” - along with last year’s revelation of the botched “Fast and Furious” operation that revealed that the highest levels of U.S. government, the Justice Department, and the ATF were involved in and/or were aware of a gun-walking effort to intentionally put thousands of high-powered assault weapons into the hands of Mexican drug cartels by way of straw sales via firearm dealers with the alleged intent of tracking the firearms to it’s members. Not only were all of the weapons not successfully tracked, but this effort also resulted in the death of a U.S. Border Protection agent (Brian Terry) by one of the weapons as well as thousands of unmarked assault weapons spreading between Mexico and the United States.

The trail of this program was traced all the way up to Eric Holder, the U.S. Attorney General, who was then held in contempt of Congress for not providing - in fact withholding - relevant documentation regarding the program. Soon after, President Obama asserted executive privilege as to prevent this documentation from being brought forth; an identical move that the President himself previously criticized President Bush for citing it as an attempt to hide behind something “shaky.”

Still a coincidence? Yes, only if you’re in denial, and in such a state of denial coincidence merely becomes an excuse for willful ignorance. After all, the Obama Administration didn’t deny the program’s existence, they only denied their prior knowledge of it, all of which raises a bevy of questions.

For example, shouldn’t American citizens be concerned that the government is knowingly and intentionally involved in secret gun-walking programs designed to put high-powered assault rifles into the hands of criminals while simultaneously attempting to pass legislation making it illegal - or at a minimum more difficult - for law-abiding citizens to protect and defend themselves with the same? Why arm the villains and disarm the citizens?

There’s no question whether or not a solution is needed in order to resolve the “gun control” issue. We all agree there. But shouldn’t we be striving for the right solution as opposed to any “right now” solution? Why do something simply for the sake of saying that we did something? Do we not at least owe it to ourselves to make sure that we do the “right” thing that strengthens and protects the citizens that the American government has sworn to protect and serve?

More importantly, isn’t it a contradiction, or at a minimum suspicious, for a government to use weapons and guns to protect and defend itself, to then pass a bill (NDAA) stating that it has the right to use these very weapons and guns against it’s own people domestically and abroad, to further add insult to injury by proposing legislation depriving these very people of the right to protect and defend themselves with the same?

Someone with the true intent to protect and defend you would NEVER obstruct or limit your ability to protect and defend yourself. Quite the contrary. They would in fact train, educate, and even equip you with the best ways to self-sufficiently defend and protect yourself, not unlike what the U.S. has and continues to do for it’s allies in an effort called “building partner capacity,” one of the very reasons, allegedly, that we are still in Iraq and other countries; to provide them the training and infrastructure so that they can successfully protect and defend themselves. 

So why not do this domestically? Shouldn’t the American people be treated as partners/allies also? Why train and equip our allies but not train and equip our own citizens? To not do so - to in fact do the opposite - is indicative of a deeper, more sinister and likely ulterior motive that sits and waits in the shadows of American ignorance and complacency at the behest of government corruption that is getting faster and more furious by the minute.

Case and point: An automobile is a deadly weapon in untrained or malicious hands, but we don’t see the government trying to limit the access or ability of automobiles do we? No. In fact we see quite the opposite.

The highest maximum speed limit on U.S. highways is 85mph (Texas), yet, the U.S. has no problem with selling automobiles that can exceed that speed limit (more than twice that speed on many automobiles). Yet, they argue that limiting the capacity of gun magazine to 10 rounds makes sense because anything more than that is excessive and unnecessary. Really? Couldn’t the same be said for cars that can exceed the speed limit? So why not simply offer the same type of handling and safety education and training for guns that we do with automobiles? After all, more people are killed by the illegal use of automobiles than they are by the illegal use of guns. Without the training it is safe to assume that vehicular deaths would increase, therefore, it can be equally and logically concluded that weapons training would result in a decrease in gun-related crimes and accidents.

Following haphazardly along this gun-automobile paradigm, the District of Columbia has recently, and shortsightedly, proposed a bill requiring gun owners to purchase $250,000 in liability insurance. The bill, B20-170, would mandate coverage for negligent and intentional acts in which a gun is used in situations other than self-defense in which the money raised would be used to compensate victims of gun violence. The bill would be retroactive, requiring those who already possess gun licenses to purchase the liability insurance within 30 days of the bill’s effective date.

Once again, a desperate and thoughtlessly proposed solution is offered while leaving more questions in it’s wake than answers. For example, how would such a bill stop or curb the gun-related massacres that have spawned the current anti-gun lobby, namely, the Newtown, Connecticut massacre or any other killing in which the weapons were/are stolen? Assuming the extremely unlikely possibility of a premeditating murderer purchasing liability insurance for a stolen gun, would such an insurance policy still honor the agreement and compensate the victims while penalizing the legitimate owner of the stolen weapon? 

And what if the policy owner decides to cancel his/her insurance or allows it to lapse before committing the murder, how does this help or protect the victims or limit the victimizer? Is a person who is hellbent on mass murder really concerned or threatened by the consequences of not carrying adequate insurance, especially if they are planning on killing themselves? Not likely. So all in all, how does such a law stop a killer or protect the law-abiding citizens who merely purchases a weapon for target shooting or personal protection?

Simply put, it doesn’t.

It seems that such laws in all of their opportunistic glory do more to limit the rights of law-abiding citizens by discouraging or penalizing them for gun ownership than they do to discourage and/or impede criminal activity, which, in the eyes of many, and as chronicle in William Cooper’s book, is the true desire and intent of the powers-that-be; to “foster a feeling of insecurity” by injecting fear into the consciousness of the majority, resulting in the willful submission and capitulation of their civil and human rights. 

Unfortunately, this is exactly what we see happening today. So, was William C. Cooper telling the truth, or was it just a coincidental lucky guess?  Many would have you believe that it's the latter.

Let’s be clear. This commentary isn’t written with the intent of supporting guns and/or the idiots that misuse them, but rather, for the support of common sense in the face of idiocy. After all, like any other tool, guns are only as deadly as their Holder (pun intended if you so desire).

　

We Must Change

During his speech on December 17th, 2012, regarding gun control and the Newtown massacre, President Obama stated, “We can’t tolerate this any more. These tragedies must end. And to end them we must change.” 

While that sentiment rings beyond the halls of truth, how do we accomplish that without first being honest with ourselves? After all, aren’t wars tragedies? Aren’t guns used in wars? Aren’t babies killed by guns in wars? And more importantly, isn’t America involved and complicit in wars?

America undoubtedly has every right to protect and defend herself as does any other country. But shouldn’t this right apply to her citizens as well?

If it is okay for us as citizens to protect and defend our country publicly, shouldn’t it be okay for us protect and defend ourselves and our families personally? Otherwise, who or what exactly are we protecting and defending??? It’s like being allowed to defend your apartment building while not being allowed to defend your apartment.

We can no longer continue to ignore the obvious elephants in the room while in the right mind believing that we won’t get trampled.

Sad truth: The history and legacy of America is earmarked and defined by guns and weaponry. Guns are as much a part of the American culture as the starred and striped flag, each being used to defend the other. We boast about our war successes while our memory-ingrained national anthem speaks of “bombs bursting in the air” as we proudly lay our hands over our hearts during its recital. We encourage our children to pick up arms and join the military so that they can be all that they can be, and then we have mixed emotions when they become what we’ve always been; barbarians.

The respect that we garner as a nation comes by way of the fear that we yield, which itself comes by way of the weapons we wave, none of which we are willing to relinquish or compromise because deep down we know that it is not respect that we command at all, but simply fear; and fear is always in search for it’s opportunity to no longer be afraid. Therefore, we always have to watch our backs. One who is respected has no such burden.

So what would we be - or who would we have been - without guns? More importantly, what would guns be without us? They would be just inert fixtures of metal, wood, and polymer, no different then any other tool or automobile. So instead of trying to further dumb down the inanimate object beyond it’s base composition, why not instead increase the intelligence of the object’s animator and/or holder beyond their base composition? After all, guns don’t kill. People do.

When Ignorance Rules, Incompetence Reigns
　
As we look back in history and recall the peaks and troughs of Mankind’s continued ascension up the ladder of Evolution - our advances and accomplishments - an honest inquiry into ourselves reveals that our lowest and most disgraceful rungs were reached when the vices of Ignorance ruled the hearts and minds of our nation and so-called leaders, thinly veiled as ethical virtues as these ruling Placebos of intelligence basked in their own vainglory while the masses followed along in sheepish lockstep.

Common sense gave way to common ignorance as the consistency of high principles succumbed to the inconsistencies of low people, trading freedom for security, equality for intolerance, and justice for politics, who, lacking the competence to intelligently appropriate a means of surpassing the bar way beyond the level of mediocrity, instead, found it to be more ideal and essential to simply lower the bar to meet it.

As a result, the children of this country now find themselves reciting a pledge of allegiance that is even less believable than the nursery rhymes they recite soon after, reflective of a self-righteous culture of low standards and low expectations that prepares it’s children for the same while audaciously proclaiming itself a “World Leader”, indicating that when Ignorance rules, Incompetence reigns.

Ancient and recent history provides more than enough documented examples of the innocent many suffering at the hands of the ignorant few. However, for a recent example of its continued practice and propagation, one need not to look any further than the remote town of Gastonia, North Carolina, where a 9-year old child, Emanyea Lockett, was suspended from Brookside Elementary school for sexual harassment for calling a teacher “cute” and/or “fine.”

When adolescent crushes and compliments are shared between children in reference to a teacher, and then are interpreted as sexual harassment by someone presumed wiser - particularly a compliment that is as benign and lacking in any degree of threatening fortitude as the word “cute” is - then, not only is the intelligence and competence of the persons in power questionable, but so are the standards and principles that provided the platform and allowance for such intolerant stupidity to exist and thrive in the first place; both of which are in desperate need of reformation and/or removal.

Considering this degree of asininity, one has to wonder that if the tables were turned and it was the adult that referred to the child as “cute”, would such a comment/compliment constitute a form of sexually harassment or pedophilia? If so, then there are tons of gushing parents peering through nursery windows who potentially may have “pedophile” soon etched next to their name.....as my facetiousness finds little humor.

But in the immortal words of Forrest Gump’s mother, “Stupid is as stupid does.”

This culture of Intolerance - which is a form of ignorance - has sadly grown rapidly over the last several years, finding comfort and expression in the false guise of vigilant patriotism and proud heritage, exposing the likelier underlying truth and reality that this distorted mind-set has always been there - lurking - just simply awaiting the first opportunity to come forth and discriminately spread its human stain.

And considering that Emanyea Lockett is an African American child in the South, the South’s ominous, inescapable, and not-so-far removed history overshadows and offers stark parallels to the Emmett Till story; a story of a young African American boy in Mississippi that was condemned, brutally murdered, and tethered to the bottom of a lake by white men for whistling at a white woman.

Apparently, a whistle was a form of sexual harassment then, and the word “cute” is now. Again, not-so-far removed.

Of course defenders of the school’s actions will say that this comparison is unfair and excessive, but so too were the treatments of Emmett Till and Emanyea Lockett; both establishing that the vice of Ignorance is the fundamental and consistent common denominator in the exercise of such intolerance, and the recent action at Brookside Elementary school serves only as a karmic reminder that such ignorance will rule and reign repeatedly until a revolution of intelligent compassion prevails.

A teachable moment is only useful to the degree that at least one of the people involved is smarter than the moment itself. Unfortunately, such a person did not seem to exist on this day at Brookside Elementary school.

So, be inspired. Be led by principles and not people. If we each thought better, then we all would do better.

Deep C.U.T.
(Complex Unaddressed Trauma)


Once upon a time, the United States of America sent young men and women into a war-zone to protect its interests. In these war zones, these soldiers witnessed and experienced the worst of human atrocities imaginable - rapes, killings, mass murders, kidnappings, decapitations, amputations, burning, torture - a place and condition where merely living to see the next day was a personal goal fueled by memories and the desirous hope of one day returning home.

The soldiers lived, fought, and survived in this heinous environment for varying time periods: Some for 6 months, some for 1 year, and the longest for 2 years. Some were even sent back after serving an initial tour.

All of these soldiers served in different capacities; some served in the field as Infantry and/or Special-Ops, other as Cooks, Supply, etc., and for different time periods, thus garnering them different experiences. However, as a result of these experiences, which were all traumatic in their own right, the soldiers all developed varying degrees of Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) – Normal, Acute, Uncomplicated, Comorbid, and Complex; the latter being the most severe.

Coincidentally, the soldier’s deployment tours all end at the same time to which they are released to go back to their families. However, the United States of America has just gone through an economic turmoil to which funds and resources have been severely depleted with none being reserved for the treatment of the soldiers’ debilitating conditions of PTSD. No debriefings; no therapy; no medicine; no assistance; nothing.

However, what the United States of America did have was land, and instead, offers the land to the soldiers as an alternative with the suggestion that the soldiers could either sale the land for profit and pay for their own treatment, or, they can use the land to build businesses to which they could use the business profits for same.

So, the soldiers accept the land and decide that it would be more feasible to build businesses on the land with the hope that this would provide them an immense return on their investments. So the soldiers along with their unaddressed PTSD move onto this land to build homes and business which proves to be a long, slow process, as rebuilding generally is.

In the meantime, many other soldiers returning from the war-zone with PTSD are met with the same fate and impenitence from the government of the United States of America, and resort to moving to this now-community of soldiers with unaddressed PTSD that varies just as much as the soldiers themselves: Young, old, male, female, light, dark, homosexual, heterosexual, etc. In fact, the main fundamental thing that they all have in common is that they all were sent by the same country to suffer the same traumatic experience.

So before reading further, ask yourself the following questions:

How do you think that this community of individuals with varying degrees of unaddressed PTSD would function? How would they interact with or treat one another? What would their community be like? Would their businesses and community be successful? Why or why not?

How would they interact with the larger community outside of their own? How would the larger community treat them? Would they be accepted and embraced with open arms? Would they be seen as equals?

Now, suppose that instead of enduring these traumatic conditions for 6 months, 1 year, or for 2 years, suppose that they had to endure it for 400 years.

Would their condition be more tenuous and complex?

Isn’t it safe and in fact reasonable to deduce that if someone can be exposed to a traumatic environment for 6 months to 2 years and acquire PTSD, that exposure to such conditions for 400 years – which, by the way, implies an egregious amount of repetitiveness, intention and institutionalization of the trauma (i.e. Jim Crow laws) - would result in the most tiered, fragmented, and complex form of PTSD?

Complex Post-Traumatic Syndrome Disorder (C-PTSD) is a psychological injury that results from protracted exposure to prolonged and repeated social and/or interpersonal trauma with lack or loss of control, disempowerment, and in the context of either captivity or entrapment, i.e. the lack of a viable escape route for the victim. – http://www.en.wikipedia.org/

So, by definition, C-PTSD would be the minimum of what such victims (i.e. exposure to 400 years of trauma) would/could acquire.

Many of the available definitions on C-PTSD site the circumstance of Prisoners Of War (POW’s) as an experience/trauma that could create it, and one could most certainly argue the minimal differences – if there are any - between a POW and a Slave.

For example, according to the United States Department of Veteran Affairs (www.ptsd.va.gov/professional/pages/complex-ptsd.asp), symptoms of C-PTSD include but are not limited to the following:

***Alterations in how the perpetrator is perceived. Examples include attributing total power to the perpetrator, becoming preoccupied with the relationship to the perpetrator, or preoccupied with revenge

- This possibly explains the coveted use of the “N-word” that is exercised by part of the black community; a stigma turned term of endearment, not unlike a rape victim embracing promiscuity.


***Alterations in relations with others. Examples include isolation, distrust, or a repeated search for a rescuer

- “A repeated search for a rescuer” – this could possibly explain the Black community’s endeavored search for Black leadership and/or representation; the same being the impetus resulting in the outcome of 97% of the African-American community voting for Barack Obama in the 2008 election. Additionally, this could also explain the mainstay of religion in the Black community (i.e. awaiting rescue by the Savior Jesus Christ), and/or why the areas that comprise the “Bible Belt” are also the areas where Slavery was the most affluent and vociferous.

- And to take it a step further, what impact could the Bible have – which sanctioned the use of slavery in Leviticus 25:44 and Exodus 21:20-21 – on an enslaved people who sought its scriptures for rescue from the very conditions that it arguably justified? Could it possibly alter how they perceive their perpetrator by depicting Him as also the rescuer?

***Change in one’s system of meanings. May include a loss of sustaining faith or a sense of hopelessness and despair

- In addition to the previous symptom, this may explain the success of Obama’s campaign slogan, “Hope That We Can Believe In.”

All scathing similarities and/or parallels aside, the horrific and traumatic conditions of Slavery are undeniable, as are the conditions/results of war and concentration camps, the latter two being examples of long-term traumas offered by Dr. Judith Herman. Probably the most blatant difference between the 3 is that only one of them was made legal (slavery) and in fact was valued as an economic necessity.

When you consider that the victims and the descendants of the victims of the long-term trauma of Slavery still wrestle with an unaddressed and untreated trauma in a current environment where remnants of the pro-slavery line of thinking have disappeared in rhetoric only, then, the reason behind the social/racial challenges and upheavals still evident and persistent in society today become more clear and understandable, and consequently, more ominous and in need of sincere recovery.

However, as stated by Dr. Judith Lewis Herman in her second book Trauma and Recovery, recovery from C-PTSD is divided into 3 stages (and these are subsequently divided into more stages): Establishing Safety, Remembrance and Mourning for What was Lost, and Reconnecting to Society.

Accordingly, Dr. Herman also believe that before these stages can work, a healing relationship must be established, and that recovery can only come within a relationship where the survivor is empowered.

Regardless of the name that we attach to the disorder, whether it is PTSD, C-PTSD, Shell Shock or what-have-you, it is undeniable that society is in fact stumbling its way through a deep C.U.T. - a Complex Unaddressed/Untreated Trauma; and like any deep cut that goes untreated and/or unaddressed, the wound will bleed out and become infected, effectively weakening the immediate area of trauma before systemically affecting the entire body until death.

To simply conceal, deny, and/or ignore the C.U.T. merely invites greater injury and trauma. And to the extent that society continues to ignore and/or instigate the unaddressed and untreated trauma of its own brethren and sistren - be it for capitalistic gain or out of pure hatred and intolerance which are all symptoms of the trauma - is to this extent that it proves the perpetrators and ignorers to be just as psychologically sick, if not sicker, than the victims themselves.

The responsibility of healing belongs to us all.

Black Burdens / White Saviours

As Haitian survivors continue to be pulled from the debris of a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010, and as a violent aftershock of a 6.1 magnitude curiously and conveniently arrived this morning in hopes of finishing the job, major media sources flood the airwaves in a Hollywood-esque, “good-guys-wear/are-white” fashion depicting numbers of white families graciously opening their doors to black children at the expense and downplaying of black families who are responsibly doing the same.

Even more curious is the rate at which they are disseminating the Haitian children, in a fashion reminiscent of stray animals in pet shelters, with the quick and convenient classification of "orphans" ignoring the effort and concern to confirm whether or not the parents or next-of-kin are amongst the survivors.

And to further add insult to injury, President Obama has selected former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, Jr. to be the two faces (pardon the pun) of the Haiti relief and rescue effort; two presidents who arguably not only created, contributed to, and exacerbated political mishandlings with Haiti that proved to be even more devastating than the earthquake itself, but who also have track records of being all but helpful in addressing atrocities that largely impacted Black people; namely, Clinton and the Rwanda genocide, and Bush and the Hurricane Katrina abandonment….for lack of a better term.

Such efforts of honor and humanness – regardless of race – are beyond admirable and would be invisible if it weren’t for a scathing and demoralizing history to warrant its suspicion and criticism; a history that has seen more of the face of displacement than it has of change.

And such a history, as it relates to Hollywood and politics, are played out on the same stage in a concerted effort to shape mass opinion and perception that alludes to a larger, more sinister, motive.

From movies about cowboys and Indians, to Tarzan, to war-related films (including the 9/11 films, Flight 93 and World Trade Center), to the more melodramatic films like Dangerous Minds, Freedom Writers, Gran Torino, and The Blind Side, to even the Christian religion, the Caucasian man has always cast himself as the savior - the protagonist and the hero - of a world that would otherwise crumble in the hands of its melanin-enriched, swarthy, helpless, purportedly less civilized inhabitants.

The intent – although sometimes naively unconscious - is to bastardize blackness; to portray black people as being hopeless and/or incapable of contributing anything morally or intellectually substantial as it relates to the progression or well-being of mankind. In fact, in the film World Trade Center, a supposed “true story”, two of the real-life heroes, both African American men, Jason Thomas and Bruce Reynolds, came forth to reveal the omission of their likenesses from the film, which were conveniently replaced by Caucasian actors, and conveniently dismissed by the makers as accidental oversights.

Yeah, right.

But beyond popular culture, society takes an even more direct effort of indoctrination. The American education system – for example - has gone through great lengths to teach our children that the freedom of African slaves was secured predominantly through the sympathies of white abolitionists as well as by way of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, while downplaying and minimizing the effectiveness and successes of the many slave rebellions, revolts, and uprisings conveniently and aggressively classifying them as mostly “failures”.

As a result, an inferiority complex is offered to blacks and a superiority complex is offered to whites, merely proving that mis-education is a two-way street, and media shouldn’t be interpreted any differently.

However, the reason for such a paradigm is simple: Black independence is threatening, and black heroes are prohibited unless they are only saving, representing, or liberating black people in unsubstantial proportions. Even then, particularly when the proportions of those saved exceed the limits of the Caucasian comfort-zone, the hero is labeled and depicted more or less as an antagonist or a threat (i.e. Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Tousaint L'Ouveture, etc.).

Moreover, a black hero liberating a white victim is viewed as blasphemous and belittling; a subliminal self-admittance of white inferiority, incompetence, and dependency.

Therefore, black/brown people killing white people is viewed as an unforgivable aberration; a terroristic, immoral, and irreverent act; while white people killing black/brown people (i.e. cowboys and Indians, Christopher Columbus, War on Iraq, etc.) is viewed as necessary; a heroic, valiant, pioneering, and patriotic act.


“The theory of human culture and its aims has worked itself through warp and woof of our daily thought with a thoroughness that few realize. Everything great, good, efficient, fair, and honorable is “white”; everything mean, bad, blundering, cheating, and dishonorable is “yellow”; a bad taste is Brown; and the devil is “black”. The changes of this theme are continually rung in picture and story, in newspaper heading and moving-picture, in sermon and school book, until, of course, the King can do no wrong, - a White Man is always right and a Black Man has no rights which a white man is bound to respect.” – W.E.B. Du Bois – “The Souls of White Folk”


But the true history of blackness reveals something different despite what has been made “official” for the history books, documentaries, and CNN specials. There is something to be said about a people who continue to exist and persist in a world that has become numb and apathetic to its demise, portrayed as black burdens and attacked continuously with silent weapons that strut with the crooked gait of Jim Crow.

Such a strength is seen in the people of Haiti; a people who unapologetically and successfully rebelled against the heels of oppression to become the first post-colonial, independent black-led nation. And it is this that they fear; a moral and determined hardiness that finds the Powers-That-Be asking themselves, “Why won’t they just die?”, and being the ignorant people that these Powers believe them to be, the most befitting answer would likely be, “Because they just don’t know how.”

So, as it was this morning, when you see a little 5-yr old black boy and girl being pulled out alive from three levels of debris and devastation 8 days after the earthquake, don’t only celebrate their survival, but celebrate their resilience, for it demarks a heart and a history that has suffered through many attempted burials and cover-ups only to resurrect and expose the lie of the White Saviors.

Haiti: The New Orleans of the Western Hemisphere

As information and images of the devastation in Haiti continue to filter in, one may find it particularly difficult to separate them from another devastating event in our not-so-distance past: Hurricane Katrina.

Body-lined streets amid rubble, debris, and makeshift tents expose poor, grief-stricken brown faces – young and old - long condemned and dismissed as the world’s derelicts, refugees, looters, and insurgents, now soon to become pawns in a capitalistic and opportunistic mélange that will be conveniently packaged and sold as a compassionate humanitarian effort.

That is not to say – by any means - that the heartfelt outpouring of benevolence and support are in vain; quite the contrary. However, it does recognize and acknowledge that there are organizations – particularly those that have large access to media - that will opportunistically take advantage of such a heart-tugging moment.

It also raises the question that if an organization were really concerned and dedicated to the welfare and well-being of a people, particularly an organization that can easily obtain and/or access hundreds of millions of dollars, then why would such an organization wait until a country or a community reached utter devastation before extending such a lucrative helping hand, particularly, when the victims happen to have been amongst the poorest of the poor for many years.

Of course – and conveniently – the reason of bureaucratic red-tape will serve to be this organizations justification for remaining hands-off. But it seems that at this juncture, this red-tape has also succumbed to the throws of the devastation; or, and more likely, the red-tape merely has transformed into a red scale that has now tipped in favor of the organization, finding the organization “investing” – in the guise of contributions - millions of dollars in a community that it historically has shown little concern or regard.

So the question now becomes ‘what does this organization stand to gain now that it couldn’t have before?’ Gentrification on a larger scale is not beyond reason or reality, leaving Haiti to be the new future hotspot for Spring Breaks, weddings, and vacation getaways in posh resorts, while the natives will serve as its employees and ambient decorative reminders of what Haiti used to be.

If there is one thing – of the many – that Hurricane Katrina has taught us, it is that the powers-that-be do not care about its poor and under-privileged; particularly, its Brown poor and under-privileged.

Two poor, predominantly Black lands of French and African heritage now wracked and ravaged by presumed natural disasters, only to await the approach of the even more sinister quake of intolerance and abandonment, who, as it relates to Haiti, was the first nation who gained its independence by way of a successful slave rebellion; and who, as it relates to New Orleans, is the home of the largest slave rebellion on U.S. territory (1811 Louisiana Slave Rebellion), altogether finds very little in the way of coincidence……if such a thing exists.

However, such a history merely establishes the fact that this situation is far from hopeless, particularly when you have true humanitarians like Wyclef Jean - an American musical artist and Haitian immigrant with an extensive history of providing aid to the impoverished country even before his non-governmental organization, Yele Haiti, was established – taking the initiative and doing the groundwork of actually working and communicating directly with those most effected (http://www.yele.org/)

There are those who walk the walk, then, there are those who appoint questionable government figureheads and agencies that request cash only in lieu of bottled-water, blankets, and clothing. However, if it walks like a politician and talks like a politician, then it probably is a politician.

Therefore, in acting out of the benevolence of ones heart, it becomes even more imperative to not let it cloud the capacity of reason of ones mind. Maya Angelou said it best: “If someone shows you who they are, believe them.” Therefore, if you see an organization that has a history of exploiting people for profit; that fails to live up to the ideals that it boasts in its mantras and anthems; that can’t address the issues within its own borders much less the issues in others; you can surmise within reason that it’s agencies don’t fall far from the tree.

The American Contradiction


Deficient in melanin, they seek the Sun feverishly to garner the beauty of tanned skin;

Eagerly padding slips for the illusion of fuller hips;

A land that quietly desires the semblances of blackness while loudly denying the equality of same finds Obama being elected; black enough to vindicate America’s conscience yet political enough to shun its responsibility.

The lines blur between “civilized” and “civil lies”, thus, the land becomes blind to the American Contradiction.

However, a warring president honored with a Nobel Peace Prize makes it evident.

Can a first class nation have second class citizens?

Native Americans reduced to reservations; the homeless convicted by circumstance and sentenced to disappear; homosexuals banned from following their hearts, while the poor shoulder the burdens of rich follies.

Tax payers pay for war, bail out the rich, and fund White House state dinner parties that they themselves can’t attend; crashed, a collision of the have’s and the have-nots.

Worshipping “Black Friday” while fearing black everyday renders acceptance a trend, tolerance an inconvenience, and Hate a religion.

A disturbed man yells “Allah Akbar!” before shooting American soldiers and the media screams its indignation as crucifix scrawled bombs fall silently on dense mosques and nurseries as another disturbed man yells “God Bless America!”

Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Neither. Both.

Christians and Muslims play chess with human pawns while God and Allah weep.

A land formerly led by a president claiming to be Pro-Life while being Pro-War leaves little surprise for its decline in its American Contradiction.

The 43rd President was the pharaoh’s own Burning Bush. Obama is planted in the ground where the bush has charred and burned, ironically making him the Black Bush.

Why a change of President matters little


Einstein once said that, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Similarly, W.L. Bateman stated that, “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep on getting what you’ve always got.”

Both of these adages – both subjectively identical – couldn’t be more applicable than they are regarding the current world events; particularly, as it relates to the political arena, which is largely the reason the U.S. has found a large number of its citizens electing a President whose temperament, ideologies and approach appear to be in direct contrast to those who have presided in recent history.

Few would argue the volatility of the U.S. economy in which its current condition – whether fairly or unfairly – is largely attributed to the decisions and policies of the Bush administration. In fact, considering the core responsibility of government to maintain stability and growth, it becomes virtually impossible to disassociate the administration’s influence or contribution to the problems without assuming their complicity and/or incompetence; both of which would arguable deem them unfit for continued leadership.

Therefore, unless one wanted more of the same, what sense would it make to continue supporting someone or something that has proven defective and/or flawed in recent history? After all, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

But day by day, more and more people are realizing that what we are witnessing is not the accidental deterioration of veracious systems, but rather, the revelation of the intentional and complicit corruption behind them; all packaged and sold under the guise of legitimacy, but built on a malicious framework of oligarchic manipulation.

Consider the United States government for example, an institution that is no different – in structure or functionality – than any other large corporation or union of corporations, which flourish and fail in the same manner, eventually collapsing, only to rebuild under new leadership and identity, but maintaining the same owners and intentions.

The exposed fraud and corruption of Enron and Arthur Anderson; the demise of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; the “golden parachute” securities of CEO’s; and the financial bailout in the duplicity of Wall Street (aka welfare for the rich), are merely microcosms of the greater culture, line-of-thinking, and values of the parent company; The United States of America, Inc.

Therefore, if the values don’t change, then the line-of-thinking doesn’t change. And if the line-of-thinking doesn’t change, then the culture doesn’t change. And if the culture doesn’t change, then it matters little who becomes the next CEO (President) of the organization.

Company = U.S. Government
Shareholders/Board = Special Interest Groups (Council of Foreign Relations, Trilateral Commission, Big Business, Oil Companies, financiers, etc.)
CEO = President (i.e. Bush, Obama, etc.)
Managerial Staff = Presidential Administration (VP, Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, etc.)
Employee/Customer = The People, citizens (aka The American People)
Product = (Freedom, Life, Liberty, Security, Prosperity, Democracy)
Projects = (War on Terror, Bringing home the troops, restoring the economy, securing the U.S., mortgage crisis, etc.)
Agent = Media (TV, News, Radio)


The only difference between Government and a Corporation is that Government allows the Employee/Customer to believe that they are selecting their CEO (aka voting). In actuality, the choice for president is done by a “selection” – much like a conclave - and not an “election” as we are led to believe. The elections of 2000 and 2004 have more than proven this. Simply put, the people elect from a pre-selected set of candidates; likened to being forced to choose between liver and chick gizzards for your favorite meal, resulting in the individual choosing the one that they can stomach the most.

**In fact, if a corporation really wanted to make its employees believe that their input was valuable and appreciated and that their thoughts were instrumental in determining the direction of the company, the corporation should do the same as government and allow employees to vote for their CEO. This - although a placebo by effect - would surely promote employee loyalty by providing them the perception and the “warm and fuzzy” feeling of inclusion**

Unfortunately, voting - primarily when the people don't take the extra steps and responsibility to hold the incumbents accountable to their word - serves to be no more than a suggestion or a glorified people poll/survey. However, if the people were to take the necessary step of going beyond the vote to hold political pundits accountable to their actions and promises by way of such tools as impeachment or civil disobedience, then the vote becomes more than a voice; it becomes a virtue; but I digress.

The CEO is ALWAYS selected by the Shareholders/Board. The CEO (President) is determined by his/her ability to effectively manage and direct the company (Government) as desired by the Shareholders (Big Business) in order to increase revenue or control of the market. Therefore, it is no coincidence that the candidate who raises or spends the most money wins up to 95% of the elections; generating funds at levels of what less than 1% of citizens can afford; siphoning much of the money from non-district residents and corporations who are not even permitted to vote in the election they seek to influence. But what better way to garner support from foreign interests other than through corporate sponsorship?

The CEO (President) is only concerned with the happiness and progression of the Employee/Customer (the people) to the degree that it impacts the revenue for the Shareholders (Big Business). Therefore, a CEO’s (President’s) obligation is to the Shareholders (Big Business), NOT to the Employee/Customer (the people). A CEO who attempts to work in the best interest of the Employee/Customer (The People) in spite of the intentions of the Shareholders will be promptly fired…..or fired upon. (i.e. JFK).

The Company (Government) is more concerned with the Employee/Customers (the people's) habits than it is their happiness. Unhappiness is overlooked until it results in habits that could potentially have an adverse effect on the company’s revenue. Reason: A change of Employee/Customer habit will change the direction of the company entirely; because a change in habit is often a direct reflection in the change of values; and things control you to the degree that they control what you value the most.

Therefore, the CEO must sell a vision of the Company (government) to the Employee/Customer that is motivational and inspirational so that the Employee/Customer will continue to work hard to support and defend the company (Government) in order to assure the coffers (i.e. revenue, stocks) of the Shareholders under the misassumption that they are assuring their own [insert Enron story here].

Speeches and photo-ops are no different than commercials and advertisements that are offered by the Media (The Agent), designed to sell an image to inspire trust, hope, fear, and/or desire in a product (i.e. Freedom, Life, Liberty, Security, Prosperity); the product being an ideological aspiration that is often in direct contrast to the actual goal of the Shareholders (Big Business). The product is the motivation. The project (i.e. War on Terror, mortgage crisis, etc.) is merely a means to an end; changeable as desired, often offering no measureable and/or tangible goal. Without such earmarks, projects like the “War On Terror” can rage on indefinitely because it’s end was never intended in the first place.

However, the original business plan (the Constitution) was designed so that the true power of the company rested in the hands of the Employee/Customer (the people), who provide the greatest energy (i.e. work, money) to the company, and therefore, should reap the greatest rewards and benefits. It created checks and balances to keep the Employee/Customer (the people) safe from mismanagement and tyrannical rule; which is why we now find the CEO (President) and his Managerial Staff making changes and usurping the original business plan (the Constitution).

Contrary to popular belief, President Bush did NOT fail in his role over the last 8 years. He accomplished exactly what the Shareholders wanted him to accomplish, which is why he has been able to stave persecution from such contemptuous acts. He was a protected investment, and now, the baton has been passed to an even more effective and more protected investment; being protected to the point of receiving Secret Service assignment even before announcing his run for Presidency.

Likely, President Bush won’t be held accountable or answerable to his role in the current state of things until after he is no longer President. That way, the parties who are truly in control (i.e. Shareholders) can create the perception of change and progress, which wins the support of the masses by offering just one or a few sacrificial lambs in exchange for Employee/Customer dedication and loyalty; something that ALL companies desire.

However, as is stands today, the corporation (Government) is still controlled by the same Shareholders….or at least, the same lines-of-thinking. Therefore, the change of CEO (President) matters little; particularly, if the values, vision, and direction of the Shareholders remains the same (to stay rich and powerful).....and there is no reason for us to believe that it has changed. The Rich always want to stay rich, and power is never willfully relinquished.

The Employee/Customer (the people) is the greatest resource in the world; no business could exist without them. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the Company (Government) to either keep them happy, or to keep them fearful; both of which would promote specific, predictable habits.

However, when a company doesn’t operate transparently and with integrity, and instead, resorts to corruption and deceit as a means to an end, then, it becomes imbalanced and starts losing the control and confidence of its Employees/Customers (the people), and thus, has to resort to using “fear and uncertainty” as a means of regaining and maintaining control. The company (government) must place itself in a position to where the Employee/Customer (the people) feels that they need the company more than the company needs them. Therefore, in order to remain all-powerful, more dire circumstances will be created by the company in order to promote dependency.

In such institutions, fearful people are always preferred over thinking ones, because they are quick to acquiesce and offer little resistance to a system that obviously and overtly works against their best interest.

With all things considered regarding the inner-workings of this giant machine of which we all play an integral part, imagine the impact and outcome if the Employee/Customer changed her thinking, her values, and resultantly, her habits. Suppose that the Employee/Customer’s got on one accord and stopped working and giving money to a company that refused to recognize and meet their needs. What would happen to the company if the Employee/Customer realized that the Company works for them – and not the other way around – and then started conducting themselves as Shareholders as opposed to Employees/Customers?

But, as with most companies during the introduction of a new CEO, expectations are running high; based primarily on the anticipation of success, change, growth, and progress. The stocks increase; and for the first several months, you can expect positive reports of progress and change (regardless if it is true or not), because this is absolutely necessary in quelling the anxieties of the Employee/Customer and Business Partners (foreign companies), and fostering an environment of prosperity, freedom, and security (The Product). All will intentionally appear well and successful…………until.

Unfortunately, due to the excitement, fanfare, and momentum of this historic moment, all forms of constructive criticism that are not aligned with those of the status quo or popular opinion will be deemed as seditious and/or antagonistic, and will go largely ignored; resulting in the true opportunities for change to go unnoticed and under-appreciated during the most opportune times; that is, until a catastrophic event presents itself and places us in a position to where we are forced to reckon with our greatest rival and limitation: Ourselves.

Barren Land: A Lamenting Stream of Consciousness

Barren; Love finds its absence in a land of matter, ironically, destitute of things that matter.

It is here where Evil ascends to the throne; lips chaffed from the heat of lies; knuckles whiten as a clenched right hand conceals Life, extended left hand reaches low offering Death. Gritty, hate under its nails impaled through flesh, fearing the duty of Wisdom; Salvation its’ reap.

Succumbing to false Gods we honor their image and call them “Leaders” as their deceptive tongues mold their cheeks - evil spirits molding flesh - finely draped in tailored suits, tasseled shoes, pinned lapels, and ulterior motives.

The President: The Head of State and the Mind of the Body politic.

Change.

A change of mind means little without a change of heart.

Who’s at the heart?

Wide-eyed, we accustom to the Dark and call it Light.
Unable to discern the bars we call it Freedom.
We deny what’s Wright and call it Wrong.

The Book of Jeremiah still weeps; still laments. The Kingdom of Judah still falls…….still, they don’t listen.

Still.

Even in its reflection its back is turned; denying its own face.

Scales tilt on the balance of “Perception versus Principle”. Principle remains high; the feather to the heavy heart.

We bow our heads not from prayer - but in shame - in order to bear the weight of invisible chains, adding charms to flatter our enslavement and embellish our stupidity. Diamonds anyone?

Entertained by the barbarianism of ultimate fighting we feast heartedly in hell’s kitchen; burnt tongues numb to the flavor of Love as Ignorance becomes the American idol. In the moments of truth we remain lost.

Worshipping money, our conscience remains burdened by God; thus, we sell salvation and pawn righteousness. Pimps and Preachers both don crucifixes. The difference is in the whore’s tithe; both on their knees desiring to stand on their feet.

Heaven reserved for those who can afford it.

Hell is guaranteed.

The heavens recede.

And Gaea stirs, restless; begging for mercy as her ravaged garments and plundered womb drips blackness; raped.

Jewels sold; made the eternal concubine.

We hunt for fun while others hunt for food, gluttonous, feverishly indulging in hotdog-eating contests while Ethiopian bellies wantonly swell.

Two swollen bellies; both remain empty.

Diana shamed.

Nuclear waste smolders in dark places - bodies and earthly bowels - undeserving.

O’ such levels of ignorance to succeed at wasting waste as we look down upon the starving beggar who makes use of it.

Our audacity calls us “civilized” and our arrogance calls us “intelligent”, but even roaches don’t kill their own.

Irony is seldom without realization as pride is seldom without pity.

God bless America……but damn the rest of the world!

But soon – and unexpectedly – thorned crowns sprout roses, transforming the “hated” into “heros”. The meek inherits the earth and the brutal inherits its debts. The karmic pendulum swings in search of rest.

Our fruit bears no seeds, and from such trees we continue to feast.

Empty stomachs breed empty minds. Barren Lands our wells run dry. Heed the water-bearer who comes to quench thirsts. The land in the water.

Definitions are limitations; therefore, for the wise, Creation remains nameless.

Things controlled to the degree that they are defined. To free yourself - define yourself.

Be formless, but form yourself. The Water.

Be undefinable, but define yourself. The Air.

Be invisible, but visible through your actions. The Wind.

Be unknowable, but know yourself. The Mind.

Be David to Goliath.

Be who you wish you were and who your greatest admirer believes you to be.

Be more.

Tavis, Obama, and Black People

This commentary was inspired but they recent announcement that Tavis Smiley will be discontinuing his 12 year relationship with the Tom Joyner Morning Show, in part (according to Tom Joyner), due to the less than favorable comments that he has received from the Black community regarding his concerns/reservations on Barack Obama.

“Don’t fall so madly in love (with Obama) that you surrender your power to hold people accountable. … I’m not saying overlook Senator Obama, but you now better be ready to look him over.” –Tavis Smiley

No truer words have ever been spoken. And if there ever were one grouping of people who would adamantly defend something that they know least about, it would arguably have to be Black folks…….at least as long as the thing defended “appears” to relate and operate in their best interest.

After all, who was it that coined Bill Clinton the “first black President”??? It surely wasn’t Caucasians. And who was it that voted for George W. Bush in record numbers after he stated that he is a Christian that is against gay marriage? Again, it was black folks. One African American woman who admittedly voted for George W. Bush, Jr. because of his Christian belief and stance on gay marriage went as far to say that “He’s strong in his morals.”

This may or may not be true considering that we don’t really know what his morals are. However, what we do know is that these so-called morals aren’t what most of us believed them to be.

If you still feel that Bush is a Christian, then ask yourself “Who would Jesus bomb? Who would Jesus leave stranded in a coliseum without food and water for 5 days???” I guess that Bush couldn’t find those 2 fish and a loaf of bread that Jesus had, but I’m sure that the National Guard could have provided it for him since they were guarding the stores that these hungry black refugees were looting,…….but I digress.

I echo Smiley’s sentiments, concerns, and reservations regarding Obama albeit not exactly for the same reasons.

Smiley criticizes Obama for not attending symposiums that were geared to address concerns in the Black community; namely, the State of the Black Union in New Orleans and the Commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the assassination of MLK in Memphis.

I think that Obama’s absence from these events was clear. Politically speaking, there was no need for him to attend these events. If he already knows that he has the Black vote in pocket, why expend the energy, time, and effort to attend such events when he can use it to target a demographic that he has yet to convince? After all, he is trying to win an election!

Consequently, it is this very reason that Hillary Clinton was motivated to attend the State of the Black Union. It was a glaring opportunity for her to win over the Black vote amid the disappointments of Obama’s decline to attend. If she would have had the Black vote secured already (like Obama), you can rest assured that she would not have attended the forum either.

In short, his attendance wasn’t politically feasible. Hers was.

It seems, however, that such an action would raise concerns as well as “red flags” as to whether or not the candidates are more concerned with the “Black Vote” as opposed to the “Black Community”, because surely, a person truly concerned with the community would place the progress of the community over his/her own political agenda – right? You would think so; but not in politics.

In politics, perception always trumps principle - and herein lies the problem - because it is this dichotomy that determines integrity.

Integrity is the right that one does even in the absence of an audience; and principle is the adherence to such. Therefore, principle is always more valuable than perception because it never seeks validation outside of itself.

Perception, however, is merely the “appearance” of correctness, therefore, its validity is determined by how it looks and is received by its audience.

For example, it is because of perception - or rather misperception - that America is now led by a tyrant whose practices and policies are in lockstep with Adolf Hitler’s (For more info regarding this, click here: http://www.28daysmovement.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1377). Most people are acutely unaware of his familial ties to the evil dictator himself (Prescott Bush, George Bush’s grandfather, financed Hitler).

Additionally, it is because of perception that the Catholic Church is now led by an ex-Nazi (Joseph Ratzinger aka Pope Benedict XVI), who was also the Prefect of The Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (formerly known as The Holy Office of the Inquisition).

Of course the Inquisition is an event that the Catholic church would like to forget and move beyond, but the remnants of religious persecutions that still exists today make it rather difficult.

And let us not forget that Hitler was also a devout Catholic.

Therefore, it is only right that President Bush ceremonially greet Pope Benedict XVI – replete with pomp and circumstance - on his arrival to America. What other way to welcome your greatest accomplice? Is it not suspect and contradictory for the Pope to condemn the atrocities of the war while simultaneously breaking bread with the warmonger???

Perception provides the opportunity to mask the truth, particularly in the absence of principle; and through the guise of great images and flowery speeches, we relinquish our personal power to the comfort and control of perceived power. We are more concerned with the appearance of legitimacy and piety than the action of it.

So, how does this relates to Tavis, Obama, and Black People? I’m glad that you asked!

Because Obama is black, and speaks of his community work in impovershed neighborhoods, many black people assume that he is attuned and empathizes with the concerns and struggles of the black community, and as a result, they tend to hope for the best from him; that as President, he would do more than any of his predecessors to sincerely address the concerns of black people in America; almost as if he is Black America’s secret weapon and last hope.

He may or may not be a secret weapon - either way - you can guarantee that he won’t be one that is for the betterment of Black people, regardless of his intent, not as long as the presidency remains controlled by special interest and despots. But again, I digress.

As a result, Obama gets a pass from the black community at large, even when he “misspeaks”. Case in point: Obama recently referred to his Caucasian grandmother as a “typical white person”. Although this comment is blatantly stereotypical, many black people turned a deaf ear; possibly because many of them can also relate to this comment, resultantly serving as a confirmation for them that “Barack is truly one of us…..truly one who understands the Black plight.”

Now, imagine if Hillary – or any other white politician for that matter – referred to another African American as a “typical black person”. Many in the black community would most certainly be incensed and offended, and would likely accuse the offender of being racist.

So, is Obama a racist, or was it just a Freudian slip? Maybe it was both. Like the old saying goes “If it isn’t in you, then it won’t come out of you.” But when the comment comes from somebody we admire, we tend to look the other way and not hold them accountable to principle, because again, we are more driven by perceptions. You can say or do something bad as long as you continue to look good.

For many black people, the possibility of seeing a black man in the role of President is too alluring. The excitement of a black man achieving such heights in America is redemptive. The opportunity to thumb their nose at a white America that has historically and heinously discredited everything brown and black is too tempting. Not only do black people want to be led by someone who they can identify with, but also, by somebody who can identify with them. And since there are many white people who are equally enamored with Obama, his viability is further validated and the awe compounded.

Now all that is needed is an Obama music video, some footage of him playing basketball, and a video snippet of him doing the Electric Slide while saying “Yes I Can”, and it will be official. Well, two out of the three isn’t bad.

As an unfortunate result however, any black person who is not enthralled by Obama, who asks the black community to be even more skeptical and dubious of Obama’s wide acceptance given the history of an American government that has the propensity to use minorities when convenient….who decrees the use of “accountability” as being the true test of “integrity” and the revealer of intent as Tavis Smiley attempted to do…..is immediately perceived as a sell-out, a trader, a “crab-in-the-bucket”, a detractor; someone who is not for the advancement of the black community; suggesting that any line-of-thought that does not follow the black status quo is divisive and non-constructive. The ideology becomes “either you are with us….. or you are against us.”

Resultantly, reason succumbs to reverence.

Consequently, since Hillary is white, and has the perception of being calculating and opportunistic, many blacks have come to expect more of the same, which is the very reason her recent “misspoken” comment (more commonly know as a “lie”) regarding her vivid and repeated recollection of being under sniper attack in Bosnia was shrugged off as “typical Hillary”; alluding to the known and common tactics of political embellishments and habitual lying all for the sake of winning. It is the “political” way.

He who wishes to rule must have recourse both to cunning and make-believe. But aren’t Obama and Clinton both politicians??? Yes, they are!

Since the word “politician” has come to be synonymous to lies, deceit, corruption, and conspiracy, the most successful politician will be the one who can appear the least like one. The pundit will need to appear more personable than political; more charismatic than conniving; and this is largely where Obama prevails and where Clinton falters.

Obama’s political history - or lack thereof - gives little for those to check against the perception that he has created, with the exception of the two books that he has written; while Hillary’s political history lends a trail to remind us just how much of a politician she truly is, despite the book that she has written.

But in all honesty, what person casts himself/herself in a negative light in an autobiography, particularly when they are seeking a role of political leadership? No one! Even if one admits to various indiscretions and improprieties (which they most often do), it is always followed and ended in an commendable and praiseworthy “lesson learned”; an inadvertent stumble to contribute to forming the wonderful person that he/she is today.

Even Hitler portrays himself as a valiant hero in his semi-autobiography, Mein Kampf. Therefore, an autobiography serves to be no more than personalized propaganda use to create a desired perception.

Simply put, Obama just may be a better “politician” than Hillary….but that is not necessarily a good thing.

But with an empowered, informed, and thinking populace, the power and lure of politics wanes, which is the very reason that people like Tavis Smiley are so important and necessary, even if you don’t agree with their points-of-view and opinions.

Personally speaking, I’m not the biggest Tavis Smiley fan in the world; however, I do recognize and appreciate his contributions by way of his willingness to facilitate open, intelligent, discussions and interviews with various people of all colors, cultures, characters, and creeds.

At a bare minimum – at least for on open-minded community – such insights provide for opportunities of reflective thought, dialogue and discussion; something that the propagandistic, one-way media does not provide. This is the only way that we can grow as community; through open communication that is founded in “principle”, not “perception”.

Open your mind. You just might learn something.
